Letting Go This Fall: What Adults Can Learn From the Changing Seasons

fall trees

Every fall, the trees remind us of something humans often struggle with:

Sometimes, letting go is necessary.

Leaves don't hold on because they're afraid of what comes next. They change when it's time.

As adults, we often do the opposite.

We hold onto relationships, expectations, guilt, responsibilities, old habits, and the belief that we should be able to handle everything.

Fall can be a beautiful reminder to ask ourselves what we're ready to release.

Let go of unrealistic expectations

You don't have to have everything figured out.

You don't have to be productive every minute.

You don't have to be the perfect parent, partner, employee, friend, or family member.

Consider replacing "I should be doing more" with:

"Am I doing what matters most right now?"

Let go of guilt

Guilt can be useful when it tells us we've acted against our values.

But sometimes guilt simply comes from setting a boundary or taking care of yourself.

Taking time for yourself isn't something you need to apologize for.

Let go of what you can't control

One of the most exhausting things we can do is spend our energy trying to control things that are outside our control.

Ask yourself:

What is within my control today?

Your actions.

Your boundaries.

How you communicate.

How you respond.

Where you put your energy.

Start there.

Make room for something new

Letting go isn't only about losing something.

It creates space.

When you release an unhealthy expectation, you may create room for self-compassion.

When you release an unhealthy relationship pattern, you may create room for healthier connections.

When you release perfectionism, you may create room for actually enjoying your life.

Practice a fall reflection

Take a few quiet minutes and complete these sentences:

This season, I want to let go of __________.

I want to make more room for __________.

Something I need to give myself permission to do is __________.

One thing I am proud of myself for is __________.

You don't have to solve everything.

Sometimes awareness is the first step.

A season of release

Fall doesn't ask the trees to hold onto every leaf.

Maybe we can offer ourselves the same permission.

You can let go.

You can slow down.

You can change.

And you can make room for what's next.
